Types of Sleep Disorders
Although some sleep disorders share similar symptoms and treatment methods, it is important to know which type you are suffering from to ensure that the problem is solved as quickly as possible.
Any type of sleep disorder will disturb your normal sleeping pattern, subsequently leading to health concerns as well as the ability to function at a high level during the day.
Five Common Sleep Disorders
Until you visit with a doctor, it can be a challenge to pinpoint the sleep disorder that is impacting your life.
Here are five of the most common types:
- Insomnia. This is the most common sleep disorder, with approximately 60 percent of adults in the United States faced with the issue at least one night per week. Common symptoms include difficulty falling asleep, as well as trouble staying asleep.
- Sleep apnea. This is the second most common sleep disorder, affecting roughly 20 million Americans. Sleep apnea is a serious problem, as it causes people to stop breathing while they sleep. During this period of time, the body does not get enough oxygen which leads to the person waking up and gasping for air.
- Narcolepsy. Those who are faced with long bouts of sleepiness during the daylight hours may be suffering from narcolepsy. In fact, many of these people are unable to fight off the urge to sleep during the day. In extreme cases, periods of daytime sleep can last several hours. It is believed that approximately 250,000 Americans suffer from narcolepsy.
- Sleepwalking and night terrors. Many people don’t consider sleepwalking and night terrors a sleep disorder, but it should be taken seriously. Not only can this affect adults, but many children suffer from these disorders as well.
- Restless Legs Syndrome. Also known as RLS, this disorder affects the legs, leading to an extreme urge to move them. This can interfere with sleep, making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. Along with this, it can greatly impact your partner.
Do you believe you are suffering from one or more of these sleep disorders? If so, it is imperative to speak with your doctor. With the help of diagnostic tests, your disorder can be pinpointed and a treatment method can be put into place.
