Sleep Disorder Tests

Are you suffering from the effects of a sleep disorder? Are you looking to verify your ailment? If so, there are many sleep disorder tests to consider.

Upon discussing your trouble with your doctor, you can begin to move through the many types of tests that will help determine the cause of your problem. From there, the appropriate treatment method can be administered.

Overnight Oximetry

This is one of the simplest sleep disorder test as it continuously measures heart rate and oxygen levels. This test consists of a small clothespin worn on your earlobe or finger, and is typically conducted in the comfort of your own home. This test can successfully identify those at risk for sleep apnea.

Polysomnography

When it comes to diagnosing sleep disorders, this is the test that is most often ordered by doctors. Many people don’t enjoy the test, but not because of any pain or discomfort. Instead, they will have to stay overnight at a sleep center.

You will be monitored by a trained technician while you sleep. The tech will keep a close watch on details such as: EKG, EEG, oxygen levels, respirations, muscle tone, and eye movements.

A polysomnography can diagnose a variety of sleep disorders including sleep apnea, parasomnias, and restless legs syndrome.

Sleep Diary

This may not be the most advanced sleep disorder test, but it is one that is often times prescribed by doctors early on. Also known as a sleep log, this is useful in assessing insomnia or circadian rhythm disorders. As the name suggests, the patient is asked to record and document sleep patterns for an extended period of time.

These are three of the most common sleep disorder tests, however, there are others that your doctor may suggest, including:

  • Actigraphy
  • Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT)
  • Titration Study

With the right sleep disorder tests it is easier for doctors to pinpoint the exact problem, subsequently settling on the best treatment option.
